HINCHINBROOK MP Nick Dametto is urging local residents to get behind Ingham Meals on Wheels after making a visit last week.

Mr Dametto spent time helping volunteers pack meals in the kitchen and then went out on the delivery run where he met with several residents who benefit from the service.

“It was great to be able to meet with the wonderful volunteers at Meals on Wheels and see first-hand the work they do which helps so many in our community,” he said.

“This volunteer-run service provides our seniors with not only meals but a smile and a well-being check during meal drop offs.

“But they could always use more help and if you’ve got a bit of time to spare, why not give Meals on Wheels a hand. This is a service more than worthy of your support.”

Mr Dametto said there were many residents who benefitted from the service Meals on Wheels provided.

“This is more than just dropping off meals. It’s the conversation and company which our senior citizens appreciate so much,” he said.

“For some, this is the only contact they have with others for the whole week and it’s vital Meals on Wheels continues.”

Ingham Meals on Wheels president Joan Garlando said more volunteers who could do deliveries would be extremely helpful.

“If we had a larger number of volunteers, it would help ease the workload on our existing volunteers and an extra run could be added allowing more time to be spent with clients,” she said.

“I would definitely encourage more people to volunteer – it is only one to one-and-a-half hours each month and can be viewed as social time for both themselves and the recipients to enjoy.”

Mrs Garlando praised Meals on Wheels’ existing volunteers for the “great job they are doing”.

Meals on Wheels delivers fresh and frozen meals three days a week to Ingham residents and weekly to Lower Herbert, Forrest Beach and Trebonne.

They also cater to the Blue Care respite centre on weekdays.

Residents wishing to volunteer are urged to call Ingham Meals on Wheels on 4776 3078 or visit the office at 3 Gedge St Ingham on Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 8am to 3pm.
