Water
The KAP believes water security is absolutely critical for North Queensland and has the power to transform our region into an infrastructure powerhouse.
Hells Gates Dam
The Hells Gates Dam is a major water infrastructure project located 120 kilometres north of Charters Towers and north west of Townsville to support large-scale irrigated agriculture on the upper Burdekin River and to secure a long-term water supply for Townsville.
The project, which would allow up to 50,000 ha of agricultural land to be irrigated, will add significant value to the region’s agricultural sector and broader economy through job-creation, tourism and renewable energy potential.
If KAP holds the balance of power after the next election we will initiate project development activities and ensure State and Federal government provide capital commitments to support the projects construction.
The Hells Gates Irrigation Scheme feasibility study shows the project would great more than 12,000 full-time equivalent jobs and generate roughly $1.2 billion in household income.
