Hinchinbrook Island’s Thorsborne Trail scores $1.5m in 2023-2024 State Budget

Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) Deputy Leader and Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto is thrilled to announce Hinchinbrook Island’s Thorsborne Trail has been allocated $1.5 million to upgrade and build new nature-based experiences and facilities in the 2023-2024 State Budget.[1]

Hinchinbrook Island nestled between Cardwell and Lucinda is Australia’s largest island national park is renowned for its misty covered mountains, sandy beaches, lush rainforests, abundance of wildlife and the island’s Thorsborne Trail.

The Thorsborne Trail is a world known 32 kilometre hiking trail, that winds its way through the heart of Hinchinbrook Island showcasing the island’s remarkable diversity, wildlife vibrant flora and breathtaking viewpoints.

The Hinchinbrook MP stated that the $1.5m funding for new nature-based experiences and facilities was an exciting prospect for the region’s tourism industry.

“This funding will ensure that Hinchinbrook Island remains a top tourism destination for adventure seekers and nature lovers,” Mr Dametto said.

“Hinchinbrook Island is a hidden gem and with investment from the State Government it opens new business opportunities for tourism operators and is also an exciting opportunity for our accommodation and hospitality businesses as increased visitation increases local expenditure.

“I understand that Traditional Owners were presented with designs earlier this year and future meetings are on the horizon to progress plans for campground and walking trail improvements.

The Hinchinbrook MP will be meeting with the Environment Minister to discuss the specific project details for the Thorsborne Trail upgrades project as well as seek a status report for the Wallaman Falls Visitor Infrastructure Upgrades project.
