Another dredging milestone for Cardwell

THE long-awaited dredging of Cardwell’s One Mile Creek has reached another milestone with a set of existing dredging permits secured.

Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto said he was pleased to hear that Port Hinchinbrook liquidator Offermans had agreed to allow Cassowary Coast Regional Council to use their existing dredging permits after attending a meeting with key stakeholders last week.

“Securing the dredging permits is an important step forward in seeing this project come to fruition,” he said.

“Now we can start the process of applying to the Federal Government for funding to undertake the dredging.

“I’d like to thank Cassowary Coast Mayor John Kremastos for providing us all with an update on the council’s involvement and look forward to working with him and all stakeholders to see this project realised.

“It is vital the Federal Coalition Government progresses council’s application for funding as fast as possible.

“After years of lobbying by locals to get this project started and my own efforts to ensure the government followed through on their election promise for funding, we cannot afford further unnecessary delays.

“The people of Cardwell deserve nothing less. They have worked incredibly hard over many years to bring us to this point and it’s a reflection of their vision to see Cardwell returned to a tourism hot spot. “
